Tshwane Deaf Association previously Gauteng North Deaf Association is one of the oldest organisations on deafness issues in the country. The organisation was first established as a Deaf Club by a group of Deaf people in the early 1920s and later became known as the Noorde Transvaalse Vereeniging vir Dowes on 11 October 1924, providing mainly services in respect of referrals and advocacy on deafness issues including Deaf culture, social services and South African Sign Language (SASL) development. With the advent of democracy in South Africa, the organisation repositioned itself with the new democratic order in 1996 and began to accept other Deaf people from other provinces, countries, races and ultimately as part of keeping itself relevant with the new development, was later renamed Tshwane Deaf Association (TDA) with the new refocused broader more inclusive mandate on Deaf development around the City of Tshwane metropolitan municipality areas.
Tshwane Deaf Association (TDA) is an advocacy, non-profit organisation operating under the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality of Gauteng Province. It changed name to align with South African situations and aims to raise awareness on deafness and hearing loss in Gauteng. In partnership with government, other non-profit organisations, and business sectors for one purpose of eradicating poverty due to increased reporting cases of unemployment amongst local youth and adults in the past few years alarmingly in most Gauteng areas. City of Tshwane Municipality was identified because of its locality and environmentally friendly as well as its growth potential and the request by majority of local Deaf people for a renewed demand for social services in the area.
As an advocacy organisation, TDA is at the forefront in promoting and advancing the rights of Deaf people at all levels of society. The organisation complements the work of government and provides a good basis for partnership particularly in relation to programmes in advocacy, awareness, and public education; HIV/AIDS Projects, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), Deaf education, skills development, economic empowerment; ICT; Deaf women and Deaf youth development programmes as well as mainstreaming of Deaf people in society.

Increased participation of Deaf people as entrepreneurs in the economic activities of the economy with focus to Deaf women through its national parent structure, SADWA (South African Deaf Women Association).

A strengthened skills and human resources base of Deaf people through skills development and scholarship.

Increased universal access and services to ICTs of Deaf people across all sectors of society.
A growing membership mass-based organisation of Deaf people able to attract and retain and advocate the interests of its members.
